Joseph L Dewees1 was born on January 9, 1779 in Kent County Delaware. He was known as Coddle Dad Joe. Joe was one of eight children of Ezekial Dewees Sr. and Sarah Harrington Dewees.
Joe moved to Indiana in 1816 from Guilford County North Carolina with his, wife, six children and brother Ezekial. Joe and his first wife, Mary Polly Griffith, had eight children, two of which were born in Harrison County. Joe married Abigail Jenkins after the death of Mary in 1856. Abigail died a short two years later.
Joe died at the age of 86 on August 20, 1865. He is buried in Bethlehem Cemetery in Crandall Indiana
Joe was one of 8 children of Ezekial Sr. Ezekial fought in the Revolution. He moved his entire family to North Carolina from Delaware about 1784 where he built a “plantation” of 175 acres. Ezekial died in 1820, four years after Joe and Ezekial Jr. went to Indiana. He left them 10 shillings each.
Joe settled in the New Salisbury area of Harrison County.
In 1837 he was appointed postmaster for new Salibury.
