James W Walker is a man of mystery. Common knowledge is that he was born in
Maryland in 1811. A genealogist who claims to knows every Walker in Maryland says he never heard of him. A recently discovered letter to James Walker ’s
daughter Caroline suggests that there was a brother, A O Walker, in Ohio who became a Benedictine Monk. So, wherever James was from, he may have
passed through Ohio. He may have been born Catholic as his brother ended up. On hooking up with Jane Jacobs, James may have become Methodist. His son-in
-law, William Bean, was a preacher at Jacob’s Chapel church around 1865.
James may have deliberately obscured his past, but he was not anonymous in
Southern Indiana . With his father-in-law, Jeremiah Jacobs, he is said to have
operated a freight service between New Albany and Vincennes.
